The Crampton Locomotive Project
In the mid-19th century, Thomas Russell Crampton, a British engineer, introduced a revolutionary locomotive design that combined large driving wheels with a low-set boiler. This innovation allowed for higher speeds and greater stability on standard-gauge tracks. Crampton locomotives were utilised by several British and French railways, including the London and North Western Railway (LNWR), where the locomotive "Liverpool" was noted for its impressive performance .
For the first time, we aim to bring this iconic locomotive to life in 00 gauge. This model will faithfully represent the Crampton's distinctive design, featuring its characteristic large driving wheels and low boiler.
Although the original Crampton locomotives were built in various countries, including France and Germany, our model will be produced in standard 00 gauge to ensure compatibility with UK-based layouts.
To move forward, we need 1,500 enthusiasts to join our waitlist. Once that milestone is reached, the project will enter the next phase at a target price of £210. At that stage, we will invite advance payments to fund production. This price will get you an 00 gauge model with the following characteristics:
- Die-cast metal and injection moulded plastic construction
- Next18 decoder socket
- Factory-fitted sound decoder
- NEM coupler pocket
When we reach 1,000 confirmed pre-orders, production will begin. Rest assured, any supporter can request a full refund at any time during the process — your commitment is safe.
Join us in celebrating one of Europe's most innovative steam locomotives and help bring the legendary Crampton to life in 00 gauge.
