The LB&SCR B1 Class Locomotive Project

Introduced between 1882 and 1887, the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway’s B1 class, designed by renowned engineer William Stroudley, represented the pinnacle of late-Victorian express steam locomotive design. Built as elegant 0-4-2 tender engines, the B1s were Stroudley’s final and largest express passenger locomotives, created to haul fast services across the Brighton main line and associated routes.

Their graceful proportions, highly polished brass, and iconic Stroudley “improved engine green” livery made them some of the most visually striking engines of their era. Though eventually displaced by newer designs, the B1 class earned an enduring reputation for reliability and speed, with smooth-running performance that made them favourites among crews and enthusiasts alike. Today, none of the original locomotives survive—making them an especially compelling subject for an accurate, high-quality model.

For the first time ever, we aim to bring this lost Stroudley masterpiece back to life in 00 gauge. This locomotive will serve as a stunning centrepiece for any layout and pairs perfectly with Stroudley-style four-wheelers and other Victorian rolling stock.

To move forward, we need 1,500 enthusiasts to join our waitlist. Once we reach that milestone, the project will progress to the next phase with a target price of £185, at which point we will invite advance payments to fund production. This price will secure you a finely detailed 00 gauge model with ready to fit crest as a fun extra.
